The beginning of confectionery production in Wadowice dates back to 1909 and is connected with Jan Niewidowski’s activity thanks to the effort of whom first industrial production of communion wafers was started.
Jan Niewidowski went into a partnership and set up MAFO company -
Wafers Factory of Lesser Poland in Wadowice. Jan Niewidowski, Józef Jaremkiewicz and Wojciech Mirocha became owners and copartners in 1/3 part each. In 1925 Wojciech Mirocha left the partnership selling each half of his part to the rest of the owners.
Wojciech Mirocha purchased a piece of land nearby MAFO and built a small, ground-floor factory of communion wafers and registered it as "Fabryka Opłatków i Andrutów Wojciecha Mirochy w Wadowicach" („Wojciech Mirocha’s Factory of Wafers in Wadowice”).
After the occupier had taken over Wadowice, both factories remained in the hands of their foregoing owners. The factories worked in limited time and made small production. On 5th February 1941 both factories of wafers were taken over by Germans and got one common name: „Keks, Waffel - und. Zuckerarenfabrik unter komissarischer Leitung in Wadowitz”
After the property settlement, two companies were created from the MAFO factory: "Wytwórnia Wafers MAFO of Wladyslawa Hanusiakowa" and "Factory of Sugar and Wafers Maria Lazarska."
On 1st April Wytwórnia Wafli MAFO (MAFO Wafer Factory) as well as Fabryka Cukrów i Opłatków (the Factory of Sugar and Wafers), on the basis of free-will agreement went into lease to Powszechna Spółdzielnia Spożywców w Wadowicach (the Common Cooperative of Food Industry in Wadowice) and created Zakład Piekarniczo Cukierniczy (the Confectionery and Baking Plant).
According to the fiat of the Minister of Small Industry and Craft, compulsory national management was introduced into factories in Wadowice. Cracovian Plants of Terrain Industry became the administrator of the factories. In December 1955 Provincial Administration of Industry in Cracow decided to create a national enterprise called: "Wadowickie Zakłady Spożywcze Przemysłu Terenowego" („Food and Drink Plants of Terrain Industry in Wadowice”).
In the middle of April 1971 the second part of building the plant at Składowa Street (currently dr. J. Putka Street) was completed; while passing the warehouse of finish goods to use, highly mechanized production line of wafers was also included into exploitation.
At the initiative of Tadeusz Mleczko, the Working-Class Local Government accepted the name „SKAWA” for the Wadowickie Zakłady Przemysłu Terenowego (Terrain Industrial Plants in Wadowice). The staff occured officially under this name on demonstration on 1st May 1974. Activity of these plants ended up on 31st December 1975. Since January 1976 plants had been submitted to Silesian Plants of Confectionery Industry in Siemianowice Śląskie.
Since 1st January Silesian Plants had been divided into Olza Plants in Cieszyn and SKAWA Plants in Wadowice making up together „Olza” Plants of Confectionery Industry in Cieszyn.
In 1982 the efforts of the management, POP and the Employee’s Council to autonomize became successful. The minister of Agriculture and Food Economy with his fiat no 72 dated 27th May 1982 created a new enterprise under the name of Plants of Confectionery Industry „Skawa” in Wadowice which included three production facilities in Wadowice. The main Plants at 3 Składowa Street , changed later into 1 Dr. Józef Putka Street, was Plant no. 1 and it was the place where the headquarter of the plants management was situated.
In 1991the facility of decommissioned branch of Cracovian Enterprise of Building Ceramics in Wadowice at 68a Młyńska Street (currently 66 Młyńska Street) was purchased and turned into the Plant no 2.
Years 1990-1997 occured to be ZPC SKAWA the time of dynamic development and transformation – mainly as a result of the process of privatization initialized in 1994 by placing an appropriate application at Bielski Voivode. ZPC SKAWA was transformed into the joint stock company on 1st March 1997.
